So, you’ve been carefully considering your options for an Epson or Canon wide-format printer, and you’ve found yourself settling on two options from these highly regarded printer brands: the Canon ImagePROGRAF GP-4000 or the Epson SureColor SC-P9500.

Is there any way in which you could make a direct and comprehensive comparison of these two machines? Well, there isn’t even really a need for you to do so, given that the organisation Keypoint Intelligence has recently done exactly this, with interesting results.

The Canon turns out to be an even more impressive printer than it looks

If you have already been poring over the specifications for the Canon ImagePROGRAF GP-4000 on the relevant product page on the Prizma Graphics website, you will probably already have high expectations for how this machine will fare against the Epson.

After all, this 44” 1118mm printer can seemingly do it all, its 11 330ml inks – including fluorescent pink for the production of pastel and neon shades – allowing for a formidably wide colour gamut and vivid, superior-quality print results. This machine also enables impressive productivity, an A0 poster able to be printed on plain paper in just 97 seconds.

Keypoint Intelligence, however, went further than merely comparing the respective machines’ specification sheets, directly testing their performance in relation to such parameters as image quality, print productivity, ink consumption, and even cleaning routines.

And – spoiler alert – the result was emphatic, with the organisation declaring that the Canon ImagePROGRAF GP-4000 had the Epson “outclassed” in a wide range of areas. “Specifically,” Keypoint intelligence said in its executive summary, the Canon “offered higher productivity, lower ink consumption, and stronger device feature set and direct print submission features.”

With regard to image quality, too, the Canon printer “impressed Keypoint Intelligence technicians with its ultra-vivid and punchier colours, which enabled its prints to stand out instantly from that of its competitor.”

In a wide range of ways, the Canon ImagePROGRAF GP-4000 is simply the better option

In one respect after another, the Canon showed its advantages over its Epson rival in testing. It was the Canon printer that the organisation’s experts discovered was capable of producing superior photographic images with warmer, more natural-looking tones.

The assessors were also wooed by the broader colour gamut that the Canon device offered, as well as how much better the printed text looked, and how finer the lines were, when this machine was used. The GP-4000 even offered better printhead reliability, as well as an option for the user to print direct from a USB stick, with no PC required.

And that’s before we even get onto the subject of ink consumption. According to Keypoint Intelligence’s test figures, the Canon used a whopping 55% less ink to print its Studio Portrait test, 26% less ink to print its Retail Sales Poster, and 46% less ink for its Packaging Proof. In an era like the present in which we are all constantly striving to use our limited resources more cost-effectively, such remarkable efficiency is a significant boon indeed.

Speaking of cost-effectiveness, purchasing your Canon ImagePROGRAF GP-4000 right here at Prizma Graphics will also give you a set of ‘starter’ inks consisting of 11 330ml tanks. That represents fantastic value when you are in the market for a Canon wide-format printer like this one.
